Objectives
Diabetes mellitus is a significant global health concern, with a rising prevalence and associated complications. Hyperglycemia disrupts bone remodeling, impairs wound healing, and affects inflammatory responses, leading to an imbalance between bone formation and resorption. Hyperglycemia also affects the surfaces of dental/orthopedic implants (DOI), potentially leading to corrosion and surface integrity issues. Multifunctional coatings applied on DOI may offer promising solutions. MIRCOND project aims to develop multifunctional coatings on based on bioglasses (BG) and hypoglycemic medications, using Matrix-Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation (MAPLE). MAPLE technique ensures controlled deposition and material integrity. The dissolution of BG in human fluids releases hypoglycemic medications providing localized glucose control, preventing oxidative damage, and enhancing osseointegration. Therefore, the MIRCOND project presents an innovative approach to reducing DOI failure in diabetes mellitus patients.
